FERNDALE, Wash. — According to unconfirmed emergency radio transmissions about 5:30pm on Monday, August 31, 2026, multiple law enforcement agencies were advised of an eastbound vehicle on Slater Road approaching the Nooksack River bridge was refusing to yield to a Lummi Nation Police officer for a traffic stop.
The pursuing officer reported the vehicle was abandoned on the bridge, and the driver had jumped into the river.
Fire and aid personnel were dispatched to the scene. A water craft was dispatched along with K-9 and drones were dispatched to the area.
Law enforcement were able to maintain visual contact with the subject as he made his way down the river bank.
As of 6pm, unconfirmed radio transmissions said they had the subject in custody and he was being transported to the hospital.
Traffic was stopped in both directions of Slater Road while first responders dealt with the incident.
