FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the Ferry Division of Whatcom County Public Works announced about 2pm today, December 31st, they had suspended service of the vehicle ferry, Whatcom Chief, between Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island.
They cited an electrical issue with the steering system as the reason for the service interruption.
Ferry Division officials say they will review the status of the service suspension about 3pm.
Wind gusts of over 40mph from the southeast had been reported in the area of the crossing today and gusts up to 50mph are forecast for this evening.

Officials report mechanics are on board.
Update 4:30pm
Officials say the service interruption can be expected to continue until at least 7:30pm tonight.
Update 7:05pm
Officials announced the Whatcom Chief has resumed its runs between Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island.
