Aid and law enforcement were dispatched to the scene of a 3-vehicle crash on the overpass at the I-5 and Grandview Road interchange just before 5pm today, June 18th.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said it was a chain-reaction rear-ender crash with a small SUV between 2 full-size pickup trucks.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman said the 2 pickup trucks were Dodge Ram trucks and the SUV was a Honda CRV.
Boyko said aid crews transported the driver in the Honda under basic life support protocol (BLS) to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center. The other 2 drivers declined aid and there were no passengers in any of the vehicles.
The road was closed for about 30 minutes as a result. Due to heavy evening commute traffic volumes, the traffic back up stretching from the overpass onto I-5 at the northbound off-ramp continued for another 30 minutes.
The pickup trucks were able to be driven from the scene but the Honda with significant front and rear damage had to be towed.
