Family transported to hospital after Portal Way crash, car fire

CUSTER, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 7000 block of Portal Way on Wednesday, January 1st, about 3:35pm due to reports of a car crash and fire.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Fire Chief Ben Boyko said they arrived to find the car was fully involved. All the occupants, a family of 2 adults and 2 children, were able to get out of the car on their own.

Boyko said all 4 occupants were transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center by a North Whatcom Fire and Rescue ambulance.

The car’s engine compartment received most of the fire and heat damage.

All lanes of Portal Way were temporarily closed for about an hour.
