UPDATED: Crashes block northbound I-5 in Ferndale Saturday afternoon

FERNDALE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched today, October 30th, about 3:30pm due to a report of a multi-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-5 at the Nooksack River bridge in Ferndale.

According to initial reports from the scene, Whatcom County Fire District 7 personnel were preparing 1 injured patient to be transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center.

The left lane remained open to traffic through the crash scene according to images from WSDOT cameras.

According to WSP Trooper Rocky Oliphant, there were 2 separate crashes.

A vehicle had slowed or stopped in the right lane north of the bridge. A Toyota Corolla slowed or stopped in response and a motorcycle crashed into the rear of the Toyota. The motorcyclist was ejected in the crash and landed in front of the Toyota in the right lane.

Behind the first crash a Dodge Dakota pickup stopped in reaction to the first crash and a Chevrolet van crashed into the rear of the Dodge.

The motorcycle and Chevrolet were both determined to have been going too fast by WSP troopers investigating the crashes.

The motorcycle driver was transported with serious injuries including back and wrist injuries, Oliphant said.
