Charges referred against Everson man for trafficking 16 prohibited newts

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Police referred charges to the Whatcom County Prosecutor’s office last week against an Everson man. Police seized 16 newts identified as Anatolia and marbled newts.

State law classifies these species as prohibited Level 3 invasive species. Possession, introduction, or trafficking of these animals without authorization is prohibited in Washington. WDFW reports the species pose a risk to the environment and require management to prevent spread.

In late 2025, WDFW received information regarding a pathogen in the amphibian pet trade. The US Fish and Wildlife Service identified a dealer in Boston who acquired species from Europe carrying an unknown pathogen. Research indicates the pathogen spreads through direct contact and contaminated environments.

The Boston facility contained between 300 and 500 amphibians and reptiles exposed to the pathogen. Shipment records identified a recipient in Washington. WDFW Police obtained search warrants to identify the location of the animals.

According to Wikipedia, the Anatolia newt is found only in Turkey, and the marbled newt is native to western Europe, where they typically inhabit mountainous areas.

The man faces 2 counts of 2nd-degree unlawful use of invasive species. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 1 year in jail and a fine of $5,000 for each count.
