It was only yesterday that forecasters assured flooding was unlikely even in the face of heavy rains and already elevated river levels. Today, January 21st, they have retracted that and advised of the possibility of some flooding.
The summer of 2015 was one for the record books. It included very little rainfall and several days with highs in the upper eighties. This included an unusual summer windstorm that downed trees weakened by the lack of precipitation and warmer-than-normal temperatures leaving thousands without power for days.
6:35am: Good morning. It is a cool and wet morning outside. Temperatures around Ferndale are in the low forties and a third of an inch of rain has fallen since 8:30pm yesterday with more expected today.

River watchers are probably already aware how the Nooksack River has been rising over the past few days. Combining that with the expected heavy rains locally and in the mountains would be reason for concern.
