River watchers are probably already aware how the Nooksack River has been rising over the past few days. Combining that with the expected heavy rains locally and in the mountains would be reason for concern.
But this morning, January 20th, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a bulletin explaining that they are confident there will not be flooding anytime soon.
A frontal system will bring 3 to 6 inches of precipitation to the Mount Baker area tonight through Thursday Night. The snow level will rise to 6500 to 7500 feet. Western Washington rivers that flow out of the Olympic Mountains and the north cascades will also rise significantly including the Nooksack River. However the guidance from the Northwest River Forecast Center indicates that [it is] unlikely to flood. [Instead,] probably cresting around 1 to 3 feet below flood stage.
