All northbound traffic was initially diverted off I-5 at Sunset Avenue.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes when possible.
Whatcom County Public Works cited material shortages as the reason for the delay.
The closure is expected to begin today, Tuesday, at 7am and continue through to 7pm tomorrow.
The ferry resumed service after about 5 and a half hours.
The closures will begin at 8pm and continue until 5am Sunday through Monday and again Monday through Tuesday.
