UPDATED: Lummi Island ferry service suspended due to steering problem

LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. — Officials with the Ferry Division of Whatcom County Public Works announced about 10:40am today, August 27th, they had suspended service of the vehicle ferry, Whatcom Chief, between Gooseberry Point and Lummi Island.

They cited an issue with the Whatcom Chief’s steering system as the reason for the service interruption. As of the initial announcement, mechanics were enroute to assess the situation.

Update 12:40pm
Ferry Division officials issued an update saying they hoped to resume service by late afternoon or early evening today.

Update 4:25pm
Ferry Division officials announced the Whatcom Chief had resumed service.
