Birch Bay Waterslides closes for season after serious injury incident

BLAINE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to Birch Bay Waterslides, located at 4874 Birch Bay-Lynden Road, just before 1pm on Friday, August 25th, due to a report of a patient with a traumatic injury.

According to people who said they had been nearby onsite, an adult male had sustained serious leg injuries while going down a water slide. Witnesses said an equipment failure was the cause. Soon after, the water park was closed for the remainder of the day.

North Whatcom Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Jason Van der Veen told Whatcom News that aid personnel treated 1 patient who was then transported by ambulance to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center and later to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The Birch Bay Waterslides website was updated later in the day to say, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Birch Bay Waterslides will be closed for the remainder of the 2023 season. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

According to the website, the season was scheduled to end on Monday, September 4th.

The water park initially opened in 1982.
