Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) crews were dispatched about 2:15pm to the Windward High School campus at the intersection of Northwest Drive and W Smith Road this afternoon for what was reported to be a structure fire with flames showing on the roof.

According WCFD7 Division Chief Dean Crosswhite, they did not find anything burning on the roof but did find a microwave in a kitchen area that was responsible for a lot of interior smoke and had, according to witnesses, been shooting sparks.

It was the end of the school day so most students had already left or were departing school. Ferndale School District officials confirmed afterschool programs would continue for the day and classes would resume tomorrow on their regular schedule.

One of the ladder units had responded to the call in the middle of a training exercise. Not to waste the opportunity, while others cleaned up inside, the ladder crew continued their training making use of the roof of a vacated building on campus according to Crosswhite.
