Bellingham man killed in single-car crash

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) reported that a 40-year-old Bellingham man died in a single-car crash near the Clinton ferry dock on Whidbey Island this morning, November 26th, about 8:50am.

According to a WSP press memo, the man was driving a black 1995 Nissan Maxima southbound on State Route 525 at a high rate of speed when the Nissan left the roadway, struck a tree and came to rest about 30 feet off the roadway.

The driver, identified as Shawn Anthony Poolman, age 40 and said to be from Bellingham, was declared deceased at the scene. It was determined he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

A passenger, identified as a 40-year-old woman from Clinton, was not injured. It was determined she was wearing a seatbelt.

Speed was cited as the cause of the crash. It is unknown whether drugs and/or alcohol were involved.
