This morning, November 13th, about 7:45am, a kangaroo-looking animal was spotted in the area of Portal Way and I-5. Word arrived to Ferndale police a couple hours later and they were unable to locate anything matching the description in the area.
It was seen by a driver coming off I-5 northbound at Portal Way. According to the driver, “I saw a kangaroo crossing the road in front of me! It was about three feet tall with a long tail and walking upright.”
According to The Outback Kangaroo Farm Owner Ron Strom, this sounded like a pet wallaby that got loose. Wallabies grow to two feet in height while kangaroos can reach six feet tall.
Strom said both can be great pets and as adults are typically kept outside in a fenced area. Strom advises at least a six-foot fence and while wallabies and kangaroos will get out if the opportunity presents itself, they are not as bad as goats.
As to running around out in the elements, Strom said, “they handle the weather real good but tend to seek shelter from the rain.” Being a vegetarian, there will be no problem for the wayward wallaby to find food according to Strom.
Strom advises if anyone were to encounter the missing marsupial, whether it be wallaby or kangaroo, they should not attempt to chase it. It’s likely it will eventually head home on its own unless it gets chased. The best way to capture it, if necessary, would be with a salmon net while cornering it. But, according to Strom, don’t be surprised if it simply walks up to you because they are quite friendly animals.
