3 teens taken to the hospital after Mt Baker Hwy rollover crash

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A single-vehicle crash near Hatchery Road blocked traffic and sent three teenagers to the hospital early Tuesday.

The 3 were injured and transported to St. Joseph hospital following a single-vehicle rollover collision on Mount Baker Highway (SR542). Washington State Patrol were dispatched to the crash scene about 12:50am on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, according to a WSP press memo.

According to the initial WSP investigation, a 17-year-old male from Maple Falls was driving a gray 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit hatchback eastbound on Mount Baker Highway near milepost 21 when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a pole on the eastbound shoulder, rolled and came to rest in a field.

The driver, a 15-year-old male passenger from Deming, and a 16-year-old male passenger from Maple Falls were all wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. All three occupants sustained injuries and were transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to WSP. Drugs or alcohol were determined to have been involved. The vehicle was a total loss.

According to updates posted by Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the crash and first responder vehicles initially blocked all lanes in both directions. Traffic was later permitted to alternate through a single-lane before WSDOT crews turned traffic control over to Puget Sound Energy to complete utility work about 6:45am.

WSDOT reported about 10:45am that both lanes were reopened.
