WSDOT: Expect lane, ramp closures along 10 miles of I-5 next week in Whatcom County

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says motorist can expect delays in the southbound lanes of I-5 between Blaine and Ferndale starting at 8pm on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Map showing the route of I-5 between Blaine and Ferndale, Washington, highlighting a 10-mile stretch for upcoming repairs.

Project repairs and improvements along the 10-mile stretch are scheduled between 8pm and 5am on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, through Friday, July 18, 2025.

Freeway lanes, shoulders and some on- and off-ramps are showing signs of deterioration, including potholes, cracks, and ruts.

Contractor crews working on behalf of WSDOT will remove old pavements and re-pave the southbound lanes, shoulders, and some ramp connections to the freeway where necessary. Additional, new, upgraded guardrail and cable barrier will be installed on the shoulders and center median and upgraded traffic counters in both directions of I-5 between Main Street (mileposts 263) [sic] in Ferndale and north of Birch Bay Road (milepost 273) south of Blaine.
