SUMAS, Wash. — Whatcom County Fire District 14 (WCFD14) has been able to replace their 19-year-old SCBA equipment thanks to a recent Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) of $408,285.
Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) are critical to firefighter safety when they are required to battle fire and rescue patients while in smoke-filled air. After 19 years, WCFD14’s SCBA equipment had seen their share of use.
WCFD14 applied for and was awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant of $408,285 from FEMA. Using the award, WCFD14 purchased 42 complete SCBA sets with a total of 84 air cylinders, 67 masks as well as 4 rapid intervention team (RIT) packs, an air cylinder fill station and a computerized fit tester. Plans were to complete training within a month and put the new equipment into service with the volunteer firefighters.
WCFD14 serves Sumas, Kendall, and Welcome areas with fire and emergency medical response services.
Assistance to Firefighters Grants are available to be applied for annually by fire departments.
