Union workers at 5 McClatchy newspapers including Bellingham Herald hold 1-day strike

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Union journalists, photographers and columnists at 5 McClatchy Media Company newspapers, including the Bellingham Herald, began a 1-day strike on May 26, 2026. The other newspapers involved are the Idaho Statesman, Olympian, Tacoma News Tribune and Tri-City Herald.

Workers voted by 93% to authorize the strike. The employees are represented by the Washington State & Idaho NewsGuilds (Pacific Northwest NewsGuild, CWA Local 37082). The unions and McClatchy Media Company have been in joint bargaining since May 2025.

The unions filed unfair labor practice complaints with the National Labor Relations Board. The union stated the company offered 3% raises upon contract ratification and 2% annual raises in the following years. The consumer price index rose 3.8% in April over the prior year.

The union asked the public not to click links to the 5 newspaper websites during the strike. McClatchy Media Company operates 30 newspapers across 14 states.
