WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Today, May 22, 2026, officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) advised motorists to plan ahead for the following scheduled traffic impacts.
Ski to Sea
The annual relay race from Mount Baker Ski Area to Bellingham is scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 2026. Motorists can expect the following.
- Mount Baker Highway (SR542) will close from Silver Lake Road to the Mount Baker Ski Area (milepost 25 to 55) from 7:15am to 11:30am.
- Police officers controlling the Kendall Road (SR547) intersection with S Pass Road (milepost 4) from 7:30am to 11:30am.
- Racers on the roadway and police officers controlling intersections on Pole Road (SR544) from N Washington Street to W Main Road (mileposts 8 to 7) through Everson.
I-5
- The right lane of northbound and southbound I-5 will close from 8pm to 5am nightly from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, through Thursday morning, May 28, 2026, near N Lake Samish (mileposts 245 to 247), for fish passage construction.
- The northbound and southbound Custer Rest Areas will close from 6:30am to 5pm on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Valley Highway (SR9)
- Northbound and southbound traffic will alternate from noon to 3pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and from 7am to 3pm daily on Wednesday and Thursday, May 27-28, 2026, from south of Mosquito Lake Road (milepost 42) to north of Strand Road (milepost 76) for utility work.
Reese Hill Road (SR547)
- Northbound and southbound traffic will alternate from noon to 3pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, west of Frost Road (milepost 6) for utility work.
