SUMAS, Wash. — Sumas Police say flood waters have topped the Cherry Street bridge over Johnson Creek. As a result, residents are advised to shelter in place.
City officials added, “All the roads leading out of town are closed. At this time, everyone is advised to stay in their homes and not go driving around needlessly. We will be answering phones at Sumas City Hall today if you have any questions. Please do not drive around road closed signs! There are already multiple vehicles that have been washed off the road and are waiting to be rescued. These bad decisions put out first responders at risk and take them away from other life saving duties.”
Shelter in place typically means finding a safe location indoors and staying there until given an “all clear.”
