SUMAS, Wash. — Whatcom County Public Works announced today, Monday, May 23rd, work had begun in the 4800 block of S Pass Road to reinstall the guardrail/barrier and pave the section of road that failed during the mid-November 2021 flooding disaster.

Approximate location of the impacted section of S Pass Road

It is expected the road will be reopened to 2-way traffic through both lanes once construction is complete. Work is expected to continue through this week into Friday, May 27th.

Motorists are advised to expect delays through the area this week during work hours and to use extra caution when traveling through the area after hours since it is an active construction zone.

The section of road had been closed from November 29th to February 18th due to “excessive slide activity and pavement upheaval at two locations.” A single gravel lane has been open since February.
