A pedestrian crossing 1st Avenue at Main Street was struck by a vehicle Sunday evening about 6pm.

The vehicle was making a left turn onto 1st Avenue from Main Street when it struck a pedestrian who was walking in the crosswalk, Ferndale Police Sergeant Travis Card said.

Police responded to the report about 6:15pm. Their investigation determined the driver, Jerry Jan Van Beek, Jr., age 46, made a legal left turn off Main Street onto 1st Avenue and struck the pedestrian who was walking in the crosswalk without waiting for the walk signal.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 crews also responded and transported the pedestrian to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for evaluation. The pedestrian was later released with only minor injuries according to Card.
