Marine rescue vessel rescues swimmer off Sandy Point

SANDY POINT, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 4400 block of Sucia Drive about noon today, August 29th, due to a report of a swimmer in distress.

Whatcom County Fire District 17 Fire Chief Jim Petrie said they arrived to find a man clinging to a log about 200 yards offshore.

WCFD17’s Marine Rescue vessel was dispatched from Sandy Point Marina since the tide was high enough for it to leave the channel.

Petrie said they were able to get the man in the rescue vessel. He was suffering from hypothermia and brought back to the marina where he was placed in an aid unit and transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Petrie said the man told rescuers he had swam out to the log.
