Icy roads reported in Whatcom County this morning

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the southbound lanes of I-5 in the area of the Portal Way interchange in Ferndale about 5:30am on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, due to report of an injury crash.

Law enforcement at the scene requested a sand truck respond to the bridge where the crash had occurred due to ice on the roadway. The left lane was blocked.

As of 5:45am, current temperatures around Whatcom County are around freezing.

The temperatures combined with overnight precipitation combine to create hazardous driving conditions, especially on bridges.

First responders were dispatched about 7:30am to the Hannegan Road Nooksack River bridge outside Lynden city limits due to a crash. Law enforcement requested a sand truck respond due to the icy conditions.
