Man jailed after being stopped via a PIT maneuver on I-5 in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers were dispatched about 11:15am on Thursday, July 25th, to the northbound lanes of I-5 south of the Old Fairhaven Parkway (SR11) interchange due to a report of a road rage incident that may have resulted in a collision.

According to WSP radio transmissions at the time, a sedan involved in the incident reportedly resumed driving northbound on I-5 while weaving back and forth across both lanes, effectively creating a rolling roadblock. Troopers took up positions at the interchange and approaching the vehicle from behind.

The sedan was seen exiting the freeway and then reentering via the northbound off- and on-ramps at the interchange. It failed to stop for the signed intersection at the bottom of the off-ramp.

Witnesses reported the driver had the driver’s door open and his leg extended out of the vehicle while driving.

The sedan continued northbound at about 35mph with at least 1 trooper following. A trooper performed a successful PIT maneuver where I-5 crosses under the Samish Way overpass and stopping the sedan. The driver was taken into custody and the sedan was moved to the shoulder of the road.

It was believed that no collision between vehicles had occurred, but the suspect’s vehicle may have collided with a guard rail prior to being stopped.

Arvind Sodhi, age 32, was subsequently arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail by WSP. He is being charged with suspicion of attempting to elude a police vehicle, reckless driving and 3rd-degree assault.
