WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the Meridian High School campus about 7am today, August 12th, due to a report of a vehicle having been driven into the front doors of a building.

NWFR Fire Chief Jason Van der Veen told Whatcom News the car was driven from a parking lot into the building’s west entrance. The car continued through the building and came to rest before entering a foyer at the east entrance.

According to unconfirmed radio transmissions from the scene, first responders were talking with the driver who appeared to be suffering a mental crisis and had holed up inside the building.

About 8:30am, North Whatcom Fire & Rescue personnel standing by at the scene entered the building and assessed the driver for possible injuries. Van der Veen said aid crews released the driver to law enforcement at the scene.
