Updated: Law enforcement search for two who fled a traffic stop

A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper requested assistance from nearby law enforcement agencies after two people fled on foot from a traffic stop around 2:30pm.

According to law enforcement radio transmissions, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies, Ferndale Police officers and a US Customs & Border Protection helicopter converged on the area of Sunset Avenue and Stonegate Way to establish a perimeter and assist with the search.

Neighbors reported being alarmed by the increased presence of law enforcement in the area.

According to WSP trooper Heather Axtman, the car was stopped for an equipment violation and both occupants fled on foot. One was arrested by 3pm and the WCSO K9 unit found the second one hiding in some bushes and he was arrested by 3:30pm. Both were male and had warrants for their arrests according to Axtman.

Jail records show WSP booked Nathanial C. Huckaby, age 31, and Cody W. Wozniak, age 25, into the Whatcom County Jail. Huckaby has been charged with burglary in the 2nd degree, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest and was for also held on an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant. Wozniak was charged with driving while his license was suspended in the 1st degree, attempting to elude a police vehicle, reckless driving, burglary in the 2nd degree, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.
