The US Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced on March 21st that the federal income tax filing due date has been extended from April 15th to July 15th this year. Taxpayers can also defer federal income tax payments due on April 15th to July 15th this year without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed.
There is no need to file any forms or call the IRS to qualify for deadline extension or payment relief as this is all being done automatically for all taxpayers.
The announcement followed President Trump’s emergency declaration last week and leverages the Stafford Act, “a federal law designed to bring an orderly and systematic means of federal natural disaster and emergency assistance for state and local governments in carrying out their responsibilities to aid citizens.”
