BELLINGHAM, Wash. — About 11:30pm on Monday, September 30th, a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper reported that they were pursuing a drive-by shooting suspect driving a Dodge Avenger heading northbound on I-5 from Skagit County. The pursuit reportedly reached 130mph.
As the pursuit made the 20-mile journey to the Bellingham area, Whatcom County law enforcement agencies were notified. Spike strips were positioned at the Old Fairhaven Parkway interchange in an effort to disable the Dodge. Shortly after passing that interchange, it was reported the Dodge’s speed decreased to 60mph and the vehicle was riding on its rims.
The Dodge came to a stop in the northbound lanes of I-5 approaching the Meridian Street interchange and the driver was taken into custody.
Northbound traffic was diverted off I-5 at the Sunset Drive interchange while law enforcement took the driver into custody and conducted an investigation at the scene. Washington State Department of Transportation reported all lanes were reopened about 1am.
Nathan Paul Trujillo, age 28, was booked by the Mount Vernon Police Department into the Skagit County Jail charged with suspicion of drive-by shooting, 1st-degree assault and attempting to elude a police vehicle.
Mount Vernon Police reported a drive-by shooting incident had occurred on Monday, September 30th, about 12:40pm in the 3000 block of E College Way. A 41-year-old man was transported to Skagit Valley Hospital with a gunshot wound.
