A visible low-lying cloud of smoke could be seen and smelled in neighborhoods in and around downtown Ferndale this evening as a result of a hay field fire.

Today’s unseasonably warm weather meant many neighbors’ windows were open when the fire occurred about 6:30pm this evening in a field on Lampman Road, east of Haxton Way. The field was being hayed when the hay baler lost a bearing according to Whatcom County Fire District 7 Fire Chief Larry Hoffman. The mechanical breakdown resulted in three large round bales catching fire.

Hoffman said the fire was extinguished by 2 engine companies after about 45 minutes.
