The Ferndale area is waking to temperatures in the teens, northeasterly winds gusting over 50mph and remnants of yesterday’s snow event blowing around.
Harsh conditions and slick roads convinced Ferndale School District officials to announce last night that all schools would be closed today, Monday, February 4th. All scheduled activities before school and during the day and evening were also canceled.
Some roads are reported to be icy and drivers need to take extreme care on slopes and intersections. Ferndale Public Works crews were out sanding some problem locations yesterday and were out again this morning doing the same.

Click for more informationAccording to Ferndale Public Works Supervisor Bo Westford, crews were kept busy overnight. Power outages impacted some sewer pumps but crews set up generators to keep things flowing the right direction until power was restored.
There were also several downed trees that required clearing off the roads on Portal Way (south of Brown Road), Brown Road between Portal Way and Malloy Road, Douglas Road west of Imhof Road and Ferndale Road north of Ulrich Road. Public Works crews are out this morning clearing the debris that was moved to the side of the road during the night according to Westford.
Most Puget Sound Energy customers in the Ferndale area have power this morning but that has not always been the case over the past 24 hours. Thousands were impacted yesterday for hours by power outages and sometimes more than once. It was suspected that trees downed power lines during high winds were the cause of most if not all the outages.
Some localized outages continue and as this story was being written a transformer was reported to have exploded in the area of Malloy Avenue and Donna Lane leaving some without power.

Click for more informationNortheast wind gusts have been reaching speed of 50mph or higher since 9pm last night. This morning National Weather Service forecasters adjusted the High Wind Warning in place since 7pm yesterday with an earlier expiration of 4pm today. It had previously been set to expire at 7am tomorrow. Forecasters say gusts of 50 to 55mph can be expected to continue until they begin easing tonight.
Forecasters say to expect more light snowfall today followed by clearing skies and temperatures in teens tonight. The snowfall is expected to remain light as very dry air continues from the Fraser Valley outflow.
Another snow event has appeared on the forecast beginning Thursday. More on that later.
About 100 miles to the south, things are little different.
