A snow-free January seemed a relief for some after a relatively snowy December around the Ferndale area. But, forecasters warn, snow and/or ice is in Friday’s forecast.

The current Ferndale area forecast according to Weather Underground BestForecast™ calls for snow beginning Friday morning and changing to a mix of snow and rain at times during the afternoon.

But the National Weather Service (NWS) Seattle office issued a special statement warning counties around the south end of Puget Sound of the likelihood of freezing rain Thursday night and Friday morning. Western Whatcom County is included in the warning area but with less certainty. The current NWS Ferndale area forecast calls for rain possibly mixed with freezing rain after 11am Friday.

The chance of precipitation in the Ferndale area Friday is 80% with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible according to Weather Underground BestForecast. Morning temperatures are expected to rise from upper 20s to mid 30s by noon with northeast winds.

Both forecast services agree the wet weather pattern is expected to continue all weekend and into Monday and expected warmer temperatures will bring rain instead of snow after Friday.
