BLAINE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 11am, Friday, June 30th, to the area of Peace Portal Drive and 4th Street in Blaine due to reports of a vehicle on fire in a garage.

North Whatcom Fire & Rescue (NWFR) Fire Chief Jason Van der Veen told Whatcom News firefighters arrived to find a fully involved vehicle in a garage at a multifamily complex.

The fire spread to 2 adjacent garages, also destroying a second vehicle. The row of garages are separated from the residences by about 15 feet according to Van der Veen. But, as a precautionary measure, Blaine Police and other first responders began evacuating residents on the ground level.

Firefighters from Blaine, Ferndale and Lynden responded.

The fire was knocked down within about 30 minutes and firefighters cleared the scene after about an hour and a half according to Van der Veen.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office and while it was reported the car’s battery was being charged at the time, this was not an electric vehicle, according to Van der Veen.

Damage was limited to the garages, no injuries were reported and no one was displaced by the fire.
