Ty Antonio Garrett, age 24, pled guilty in Whatcom County Superior Court last week to one count of assault of a child in the third degree.

The charge stemmed from Garrett’s arrest last year after Ferndale police were notified October 16th that a 2-year-old child had been admitted to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center with leg injuries. Doctors determined the leg had been fractured.

According to Ferndale Police Lieutenant Matt Huffman, police determined Garrett was the boyfriend of the child’s mother and their investigation revealed he had, on two separate occasions, assaulted the child.

The first incident occurred October 15th when Garrett grabbed the child by the face in a fit of frustration, causing bruising. The second incident happened on the 16th. According to Huffman, “while change the child’s diapers, [Garrett] again became angry at the child, yanking and holding the child in the air by one leg. This is what caused the fracture to the leg.”

According to court documents, Garrett, who had no previous criminal history, was sentenced to 3 months of jail time along with $1,800 in court costs and fines.

Garrett is also prohibited from coming into contact with or within 500-feet of the victim for 5 years.
