A rare thunderstorm pushed into Whatcom County last night, September 7th, about 9pm after rolling north from the south Puget Sound region. For the next few hours, the area was treated to a lightning show, lots of thunder and brief heavy rain.
The core of the weather system missed the Ferndale area, instead passing over Bellingham and eastern Whatcom County while moving in a north-northeast direction.
Puget Sound Energy reported much of the Bellingham area was without power for a few hours. Bellingham Police reported over 17,000 were without power about midnight. There were dozens of other localized outages scattered around the county according to PSE.
Bellingham Fire Department reported responding to a garage on fire near the intersection of Northwest Avenue and W Illinois Street. While they received 177 calls resulting in 70 dispatches during the storm, this was the only working structure fire for the evening. No storm-related injuries were reported.
As of 7:30am today, September 8th, PSE reports they are working on 100 outages throughout the Puget Sound region with just over 1,000 customers impacted.
