East Whatcom County assesses flood damage, Ferndale prepares, plus road closures

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Nooksack River level gages indicate cresting has occurred at the Saxon Road bridge in Acme and at Cedarville in Deming while cresting in Ferndale is expected occur between 4pm and 10pm today, Thursday, December 11, 2025. This flood event is being compared with the 2021 mid-November flooding disaster.

Officials with the City of Sumas advised citizens that as of about 8:50am floodwaters were rising in town and all routes leading in and out of town were fully closed.

  • Garrison Road
  • Clearbrook Road

Officials with the City of Everson announced city hall is closed after sustaining heavy flood damage and all routes leading in and out of town were fully closed.

  • all roads north of Robinson Street
  • all roads north of the Nooksack River bridge

Officials with the City of Nooksack advised the following were fully closed.

Nooksack added that there is a sewer system outage due to flood waters.

Due to the flood water the sewer system is over full. It will backed up into your home if you use it.no showers and try not to flush toilets. we will update you as soon as Everson can get back on line. (Nooksack)

Please be advised that a Sewer outage due to flood water interruption of sewer services affecting your location is ongoing. Outage is due to flood water. Service crews are on-site. We will provide notice once services have been restored.

City of Ferndale officials advised about 8:30am, “At this time, levees in Ferndale are holding, and crews continue 24/7 monitoring of levees, pump stations, and known trouble spots.” They added that those “living in a low-lying or previously flooded area, take action now.” A public sandbag distribution site was set up at the south end of Second Avenue.
