Early round of high winds leaves thousands without power across Whatcom County

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — As of 3:20pm today, Monday, September 25th, over 3,300 Puget Sound Energy (PSE) customer addresses were without power as high winds began buffeting Whatcom County.

PSE reported nearly 2,000 were impacted by large outage in the area of Wickersham to nearly Everson that began shortly after 3pm.

While no advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service Seattle office, forecasters with Environment Canada have issued alerts forewarning of strong winds through Tuesday.

This is the first wind storm of this autumn with full foliage. The heavy tree branches are more prone to break in strong winds and it may lead to more damage and power outages than subsequent wind storms of similar wind speeds later in the season. Environment Canada (September 25, 2023)

Gusts reaching nearly 40mph have been recorded today at the Bellingham International Airport.

PSE said that as of 3:20pm today, about 6,000 of their customer addresses across all of the Puget Sound region were without power.
