Details on the boiler breakdown at FHS

Some neighbors have pointed to the recent boiler breakdown at Ferndale High School (FHS) as an example of why FHS buildings are in need of renovation and/or replacing.

According to maintenance staff who responded to questions about the incident, the boiler that failed did so Friday morning after a gas valve solenoid and ignition control shorted out. Maintenance staff say they have been looking for replacement parts but the parts are no longer built and so they are looking for “a substitute workaround.”

This boiler was in used condition when the School District acquired it in 1976. Maintenance staff say it is expected to outlast the controls running it, such as the shorted solenoid and ignition control.

The boiler will be able to be restarted if replacement parts can be located and installed. If that is not possible, “then replacement becomes an option,” according to maintenance staff.

Until then, there is no heat in the gym, the 400 wings and half of the 500 wings. Maintenance staff added, “We could place heaters in rooms that requested it.”
