UPDATED: Crash on Nooksack River bridge blocks I-5 northbound lanes during evening commute

FERNDALE, Wash. — Fire and medical personnel were dispatched to the northbound I-5 lanes in Ferndale about 6:10pm on Thursday, July 21st, due to a report of a crash on the Nooksack River bridge.

Both northbound lanes were initially blocked but by 6:25pm, 1 lane had been reopened. 1 lane of southbound I-5 was also temporarily blocked.

By 6:30pm, traffic in the northbound lanes was backed up nearly 3 miles to the Slater Road interchange.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief said medical personnel assessed the 2 drivers and released them at the scene with minor injuries.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Jacob Kennett told Whatcom News troopers were dispatched to a 2-car crash on the bridge about 6pm. The causing driver was arrested for driving under the influence and their vehicle impounded.
