BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to northbound I-5 at the Iowa Street on-ramp today, March 30th, at about 3:25pm due to a report of a multi-vehicle crash.
Washington State Patrol responded and their initial investigation determined an SUV towing a trailer was northbound in the left lane and a Toyota Camry sedan was northbound in the right lane according to Trooper Rocky Oliphant. The SUV lost control and collided with the Toyota, both veered to the right and ended up in the grassy area between the on-ramp and main I-5 lanes.

Passengers in the vehicles suffered only minor injuries according to Oliphant.
Oliphant said the investigation uncovered that the trailer had been stolen from a location about 7 miles south of the crash.
The owner of the trailer had been hauling a load and realized part of the load had fallen off, but they did not know where. They detached the trailer and left it on the side of I-5 in order to quickly locate what had fallen off. They were able retrieve the lost part of the load and then discovered the trailer was missing upon returning to where it had been left.
The driver of the SUV towing the trailer was issued an infraction for improper lane usage for coming out of his lane and colliding with the Toyota. Oliphant said charges for being in possession of the stolen trailer are being referred to the Whatcom County Prosecutor’s office.
