BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Both lanes of southbound I-5 north of the Sunset Drive interchange were closed due to a car versus motorcycle crash about 3:35pm on Sunday, September 18th.
Initial reports were this was an injury crash.
As of 3:45pm, Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Bellingham Fire Department personnel were on scene.
According to the PulsePoint EMS dispatch log reporting system, at least 1 patient was transported from the scene to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center in Bellingham via a medic unit.
As of 4pm, both lanes were reopened while WSP continued their work at the scene on the right shoulder. Southbound traffic was backed up about 2 miles to the Northwest Avenue/Drive interchange.

WSP Trooper Anthony Reese told Whatcom News that a deer entered the southbound traffic lanes and was struck by vehicle. Vehicles behind that collision were braking and a motorcycle crashed into the rear of a slowing vehicle.
Reese said the motorcyclist was transported by ambulance from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries that included a broken ankle.
