Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies and North Whatcom Fire and Rescue units were dispatched to Main Street and Portal Way in Custer for a two-vehicle crash yesterday, Tuesday, just before 5pm.

According to WCSO Undersheriff Jeff Parks, a red Mazda 3 (unknown year) was heading north on Portal Way when the driver of a black 2015 Hyundai Elantra failed to yield and pulled out from Main Street and was struck by the Mazda.

Aid crews assessed and treated two people from the Mazda and one from the Hyundai for minor injuries and no one required transport. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Parks said a DUI investigation resulted from the crash. The Hyundai driver, Peggy Sue Miller, age 62, of Ferndale had just left Tony’s Tavern, located on the same block of Main Street, and was determined to be under the influence at the scene. She was transported to Whatcom County Jail, processed for DUI and booked.
