A reader asked DF about a small utility vehicle spraying the street curbs in their neighborhood. We asked around and found the answer.

According to Ferndale Public Works supervisor Bo Westford, this is an annual effort to knock down dandelions and their ilk before they can establish a foothold and damage curbs and sidewalks. Spot applications will be repeated in the summer in some problems areas.

Westford said there is no reason for concern regarding any hazard to humans or pets as a result of the spraying. The spray used is a generic spray, similar to Roundup™, that contains glyphosate, a non-selective poison that kills any plant it comes in contact with. Gardeners typically use it to kill weeds and invasive plants in paths and paved areas.
