Shoppers at Haggen in Ferndale got a surprise this morning seeing the Bellingham Police bomb squad at work in the parking lot.
According to Ferndale Police Lieutenant Matt Huffman, a person out for their morning walk came across something that looked like a grenade. They picked it up and continued their walk.
Upon reaching the Haggen parking lot they called 911 and Ferndale police responded. It was determined to be a grenade and the bomb squad was called.
The area was cordoned off while the item was further evaluated. It was ultimately determined to be a grenade but the core had been removed rendering it harmless.
The grenade was taken away for proper disposal.
The city asks that people not handle anything that appears to possibly appear to be an explosive device and to call 911 immediately instead.
