UPDATED: 2 reported killed in Squalicum Way rollover crash

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham Police Department (BPD) reports 2 persons were found deceased at the scene of a rollover crash in the 1000 block of Squalicum Way late Thursday, December 28th.

Emergency services radio transmissions at the time indicate first responders were dispatched about 8pm due to reports of a single-vehicle rollover crash. The Bellingham Police Department (BPD) told Whatcom News a caller said that they had been driving on Squalicum Way when then they noticed debris in the roadway, investigated, discovered a vehicle on its roof and discover what appeared to be a deceased person.

BPD, Bellingham Fire Department and Washington State Patrol personnel responded and found a heavily damaged, upside-down white vehicle and two deceased individuals. Both individuals had been ejected from of the vehicle during the crash. It was determined neither had been wearing their seatbelt.

The preliminary investigation determined the vehicle had been traveling westbound on Squalicum Way, left the roadway and then struck a tree.

Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the vehicle wreck. Investigation into the collision is ongoing. A Whatcom County Support Officer responded to the scene to aid the reporting party, who was distressed by the incident. Bellingham Police Department (December 29, 2023)

Officers on scene were able to identify the involved as a 26-year-old male and a 31-year-old male. Next of kin were notified.

Squalicum Way was closed between Meridian and West Streets while BPD crime scene technicians and officers investigated scene. According to a BPD statement at 9pm, the road was estimated to reopen around midnight.
