Morning vehicle fires keep first responders busy around Custer and Ferndale

CUSTER, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the Custer rest area on the northbound lanes of I-5 about 6:45am, Wednesday, December 3rd, due to reports of a vehicle fire.

According to the State Patrol, troopers arrived to find a passenger vehicle fully involved in the rest area parking lot. No structures were at risk and the driver was located safe inside a bathroom.

The vehicle was a total loss and it was believed the driver, who was in contact with family, was living out of the vehicle.

The passenger vehicle side of the rest area was closed until about 9am.

About 6:50am, first responders were dispatched to a vehicle fire in a parking lot behind a business at the intersection of Haxton Way and Slater Road.

According to Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) Fire Chief Larry Hoffman, a 1992 Chevrolet S10 pickup was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Bellingham Fire Department arrived firefighters arrived first and knocked down the fire according to Hoffman.

The vehicle had been parked at the far end of the parking lot away from any structures. There were no injuries but the vehicle was considered a total loss. He had no information regarding any occupants except that no one was located near the vehicle.
