LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 6:20pm on Sunday, June 9th, due to a report of kayakers in distress.

The US Coast Guard Station Bellingham issued a statement saying that they received a notification of an SOS from 1.5 miles northwest of Lummi Island and responded.

One of the rescued individuals activated their inReach (satellite messenger) device to notify search crews.

Once on scene, our crew located the distressed kayakers with the assistance of U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles. In the frigid 50-degree water were 4 adults, 1 child, and 1 dog – ALL, thankfully, wearing PFDs (personal flotation device). All were transported back to our Station, with one person receiving treatment from EMS.
