WSP statistics for I-5 crashes in Bellingham so far this year detail what many locals have experienced

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — According to the Washington State Patrol’s Collision Analysis Tool, there have been over 200 crash reports filed so far in 2024 in the I-5 southbound and northbound lanes across the 10-mile stretch between the Old Fairhaven Parkway and Slater Road interchanges. An average of 23 per month.

The times when the crashes occurred are as follows.

  • 12 – midnight to 6am
  • 41 – 6am to noon
  • 141 – noon to 6pm
  • 24 – 6pm to midnight

Approximate locations of the crashes based on nearest interchange.

  • 12 – Old Fairhaven Parkway
  • 13 – Samish Way
  • 6 – Lakeway Drive
  • 58 – Ohio/Iowa/State Streets
  • 63 – Sunset Drive
  • 30 – Meridian Street
  • 11 – Northwest Avenue
  • 16 – W Bakerview Road
  • 9 – Slater Road

Severity of injuries to vehicle occupants in the crashes have been reported as below.

  • 173 – no injuries
  • 11 – minor injuries
  • 2 – serious injuries
  • 3 – unknown

There were 13 crashes involving a car versus an obstacle (e.g. deer, debris, object, etc.).

There were 45 crashes involving more than 2 (3 to 7) vehicles.

Weather at the times of the crashes were reported as follows.

  • 130 – clear
  • 39 – overcast
  • 42 – raining
  • 2 – sleet/hail/freezing rain
  • 5 – snow
