Windstorm expected Tuesday evening with gusts to 60mph possible

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A previously issued wind advisory has been upgraded to a high wind warning as of 3am this morning, Tuesday, November 12th.

Forecasters with the Seattle office of the National Weather Service (NWS) warn of sustained southeast winds of 30 to 40mph 25 to 35mph with gusts to 55mph 60mph between 4pm today and 4am tomorrow (Updated at 3pm). The warning area stretches across northern regions of western Washington including western Whatcom County.

Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.

A gale warning will also be in effect for coastal areas during the same time with southeast winds of 30 to 40 knots expected.

Residents with boats in marinas should take preemptive actions to secure their vessels.  People living on the coast should be prepared for high winds.  Beginning late this afternoon winds will start to increase peaking overnight, then decreasing by early Wednesday morning.

The short-term forecast from NWS says to expect cooler and unsettled weather can be expected through Thursday.

A strong weather system will move into western Washington this afternoon and evening, bringing another round of widespread precipitation and gusty winds to the region. Unsettled conditions from this system will persist into Thursday, though conditions look to remain cool and unsettled through much of the remainder of the week under a general troughing pattern.
