Whatcom Sheriff deputy’s vehicle struck while blocking road, 2 sent to hospital

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 5:45pm to a trailer fire on Elder Road near Mountain View Road in Ferndale. As a result of the firefighting effort, Mountain View Road was closed to all traffic between Barr Road and Elder Road.

About 7:15pm, a deputy whose vehicle was being used to block westbound traffic at Barr Road radioed their dispatch that they had just been involved in a collision.

Washington State Patrol reported the collision occurred when a 2005 Cadillac STS was westbound on Mountain View Road while the WCSO 2015 Ford Explorer was fully blocking the road at Barr Road with their vehicle’s emergency lights activated. The Cadillac struck the Ford. The Ford went into a ditch on the side of the road and the Cadillac ended up on the westbound shoulder.

WSP reported both the 31-year-old deputy and the 76-year-old Cadillac driver had been wearing their seatbelts. Both were transported by aid personnel to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation according to WSP and it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
